At what age did you begin playing your primary instrument?

8 years old.

Do you have any favorite instructors or mentors who played a critical role in your development as a musician?

My trumpet teacher in college, Dr. George Hitt. He got to know me well and tailored my lessons to my musical interests

Outside of group rehearsals, approximately what length of time and/or how many times per week do you practice your instrument?

Now, I play approximately 1.5 hours/day.

Tell us a bit about your advanced training. Did you attend college for your instrument? Do you continue to take lessons?

During college, I studied trumpet with Dr. George Hitt, played in the concert band, the jazz band and periodically in a jazz combo. I don’t take lessons anymore but I continue to learn from the outstanding musicians around me.

Share a little about your family...

I’m married with 3 children and 8 grandchildren.

Do you have any hobbies or collections?

I really enjoy sailing and being on the water in general.

Do you have any words of encouragement for someone who dreams of becoming a musician?

Surround yourself with excellent musicians, preferably better than you, and pay close attention to how they play.
