At what age did you begin playing your primary instrument?

Age 10

What motivated you to become a musician?

[I] always paid attention to the music around me and wanted to be part of it. In addition, I my parents were encouraged by my first grade teacher to pursue it.

Do you have any favorite instructors or mentors who played a critical role in your development as a musician?

Dr. John Hill, University of Iowa trombone instructor. He showed faith in my potential when I didn't have any.

Outside of group rehearsals, approximately what length of time and/or how many times per week do you practice your instrument?

I try to play a little every day, sometimes successfully, sometimes not so much.

Share a little about your family...

I was married to my wife, a marvelous vocalist/educator/actor for 38 years. She passed in 2023. I have 2 children and 5 grandchildren, between the ages of 3 and 5.

Do you have any hobbies or collections?

Love bluegrass I own (…notice I didn’t say play) a banjo, love travel, love theatre, love hanging with my family, am a long distance walker.

Tell us a bit about your advanced training. Did you attend college for your instrument? Do you continue to take lessons?

I attended The University of Iowa and earned a Bachelor of Music degree.

What is your favorite spot?

Colorado, near Salida… as is my front porch.

Do you have any words of encouragement for someone who dreams of becoming a musician?

Try it. You’ll like it. Surround yourself with music makers. It’ll feed your soul.
